Public Reception and Conversation with Texas State Poet Laureate, Dr. Carmen Tafolla, April 1, 2016 at 6:00PM

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  If you are interested in, and and care about, a lack of presence or representation in the state curriculum of culturally relevant children's books, consider joining us for a spectacular evening with Texas State Poet Laureate, Dr. Carmen Tafolla who will present on state in the Black Box Theater at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Culture Center four moving children's characters, as well as dramatized excerpts from her children's book on legendary leader, Emma Tenayuca.  Her book is titled, That's Not Fair: Emma Tenayuca's Struggle for Justice.  We will follow with a conversation that reflects on Dr. Tafolla's presentation and addresses how we are to address the paucity of children's books for children of color in our schools.  Many thanks to all of our co-sponsors:

LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies & Collections, Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, City of Austin Parks & Recreation, Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Culture Center, Austin Independent School District English Language Learners, Austin Area Association for Bilingual Education, Nuestro Grupo, Academia Cuauhtli, National Latino Education Research and Policy Project.

We begin with a 6:00PM reception catered by El Sol y La Luna, with the program beginning at 6:30PM.  This is our third annual book event and we are grateful to our numerous co-sponsors.  Looking forward to another wonderful evening!
